Tampa Bay - Saltwater Fishing Report

High pressure and small craft warnings kept many anglers on the beach this week. Capt. Billy Jordan and I got out early in the week, despite the wind. We were going to look for cobia, but between poor water clarity and a pretty good chop, we opted to net some threadfins and fish the inshore passes south of the Little Manatee River instead.
Finding the threadfins on the surface was easy, even in fairly rough water. It took only a single throw of a 10 foot half inch net to get all the bait we needed. I don’t try to keep more than three or four dozen baits in the well, as I seldom fish them whole anyway. On high tide I prefer to cut them in chunks and fish them on RipTide jig heads. The jig affords the best possible casting accuracy, and stays put. This is an effective high tide tactic on the mangrove shoreline between Sand Key and Joe Island. We caught a short snook and a short redfish on the cut bait right away, and then the bite stopped. We tried a few more passes inside Little Cockroach Bay, but there was too much boat traffic to expect any action.
Capt. Danny Guarino reports Spanish mackerel all over the Southshore of Tampa Bay with the biggest concentration of fish hanging on the range markers south of Port Manatee.
Capt. Chet Jennings said that the wind kept boat traffic to a minimum later this week, and despite the chop he caught two tarpon on Thursday off Simmons Park. He said that he relied on cut threadfins this week, and also got into some oversized redfish with them on the flats south of Cockroach Bay. The biggest redfish measured 35 inches. He asked me when the wind was going to lighten up, and my guess was mid July.
