Tampa Bay - Saltwater Fishing Report

The wind finally let up this and water clarity has improved. That’s allowed some anglers to get out into the middle of the bay, and their mackerel reports are good. Gary Kennedy of Ruskin said he caught some very big Spanish mackerel while trolling gold spoons on short wire leaders around the shipping lanes. He said he tried chumming with cut bait, but slow trolling was more effective.
I fished with lure manufacturer Damon Albers of Clermont, and his son Jordan on Wednesday and we saw a few fish on the flats south of Apollo Beach, but not enough to hook up with artificials. I netted some threadfins and we went the cut bait rout south of the Little Manatee River. The first fish we put in the boat would have been an oversized redfish had it still had a tail. The fish was very fiesty despite swimming around with little more than a stump – no doubt a victim of another predator in its youth. It still measured nearly 26 inches and Damon and I agreed we should not keep this one. We hooked two more redfish in the same spot fishing cut threads on RipTide jig hooks, but then the catfish moved in, and we moved out.
Capt. Danny Guarino reported slow fishing on lazy tides late in the week in Little Cockroach Bay. Capt. Chet Jennings echoed those sentiments, but said he found some big jack crevalles at the mouth of the Little Manatee River on an outgoing tide. He said the bite was better earlier in the week in the passes around Cockroach Bay, where he caught snook and redfish.
Capt. Larry Malinoski found permit and amberjack on the offshore wrecks in the middle of the week, and said the deepwater bite was hot.
