Tampa Bay - Saltwater Fishing Report

The water temperature in the Gulf is up to 93 degrees, and the action on Southshore Tampa Bay got hot right along with it. We had a strong falling tide in the afternoon earlier this week, with minus low tides around sunset. For the boys at Shell Point this means wade fishing.
Eight of us went to Big Pass just north of the Cockroach Bay entrance channel, and found plenty of trout biting, but most of them were short. Ed Childers of Ruskin had the biggest fish of the soiree with an 18-inch trout. Several snook were also caught and released, but they were mostly small fish. I waded across the bar looking for redfish and had no trouble finding them. In fact I saw at least a dozen tailing fish, but despite making some good casts with a RipTide flats chub, but I never got a hit on my go to bait. I did have several fish turn on the lure and follow it, but no takers.
The next day I fished with Clint and Sandy Dobson on Clint’s birthday. We started out looking for redfish on the flats south of Apollo Beach. Water clarity was good, but the tide already too high when we got there. We did catch one small red before heading south to Little Cockroach Bay. We had much better luck there fishing with cut bait on RipTide jig hooks. I had netted some threadfins earlier that morning. We hooked five redfish and two snook fishing the shadow line just prior to the change of the tide.
The weather got better and better, but the fishing slowed down as we came under a big high-pressure center.
Capt. Billy Jordan and I did some trolling on Friday between the Bahia Beach reef and the Sunshine Skyway and never had the first strike. The fishing was great but the catching wasn’t so hot.
