Tampa Bay - Saltwater

Capt. Matt Ercoli
November 15, 2000
Tampa Bay - Saltwater Fishing Report

Gees what a great time fishing we are having. What can I say could it be anymore perfect? I sure look forward to this time of year, cool refreshing mornings and near perfect afternoons. The fishing equals or surpasses the weather, don't know what I like best so I'll take them both.

Snook snook snook, today we actually lost count and my partner Shawn said in one spot today he never moved the anchor and caught 30 snook. Ultra low tides have congregated the snook into tight schools and when you're on them it's a free for all. Yesterday Dorian Manwell and his wife also had a banner day. Dorian's wife put her rod down after boating 25 snook or so. Dorian stuck to fly-fishing and bagged 10 on the fly, the largest almost 26 inches. We then left the fish biting in search of a giant jack cravel but never did connect. All that and the couple were back to the dock by noon to catch a flight out of Tampa. Three days before Dorian had a backcountry slam on the fly. That's really a good idea of how the past week has been. The fly fishing for fall snook is better this fall than it has ever been before. I've had pretty much 100% success rate for snook on the fly for guys that a willing to work at it. The action is not as fast as the spring but should continue to be good until the water temperature drops and holds below 68 degrees.

We were having some fairly good red fishing up until 3 days ago, the ultra low tide that is making our snooking so good made the red fish hard to locate.

Trout are extremely plentiful although they are out of season now.

I 'm not really seeing as many cobia here lately, but I have not really given them a fair chance.

I keep waiting for the pompano to show up on the shallow flats, it's getting to be about that time of year. Popano are great fighters and even better to eat truly one of my favorite targets, especially those four and five pounders.

The kingfish are in full force right now, but everyone wants to go flats fishing, so I am missing the action. Most of the fish are 10 to 20 pounds. There are enough fish out there right now to have good success with fly-fishing.

Hope you enjoyed my report.

Keep your drags screaming,

Capt. Matt Ercoli
