Tampa Bay - Saltwater

Capt. Matt Ercoli
August 27, 2005
Tampa Bay - Saltwater Fishing Report

Hello fellow fisherman, I Hope everyone is having a productive summer out on the water. The fishing has been very good. We’ve had more snook than anything else, and some of the largest my boat has taken all year. Last week our largest was 38 inches followed by a 37 incher and three 33 to 34 inch fish. Yesterday a client boated a 36, 33 and a 30 incher before 9am, pretty darn good for the junior division. On top of that a lot of the average snook we are catching are in the 24 to 27 inch class. We have been averaging between 20 to 40 snook per day, which has been very consistent. I really can’t think of any slow days we have had in the past month.

Red fishing is ok, I haven’t been catching a lot but most everyday we are limiting out with our keepers. We are coming up on our best month of the year so I figure it is only a matter or time before they explode as well. We have been catching a few mixed with the snook in the 21 to 25 inch class.

Trout are also biting very good, you have to weed through lots of little ones but we are getting them up to 20 inches. As for offshore fishing, I don’t have anything to report because I have spent the last month no further out than the beach when looking for tarpon. As for other fish, I have been taking a few monster flounder and some decent mangrove snapper while snook fishing. There are tons of sharks in the bay (black tip and bulls) if that interest you. So now as long as the hurricanes stay away, we should have some great up and coming fishing. I wouldn’t worry about that though because the Tampa Bay area hasn’t had a hit in something like 50 years. To sum it up, the fishing is as hot as the weather so it’s best to get your fishing done by 1pm or so, the fish have been biting like crazy in the mornings.

Well good luck fishing everyone, if you would like to get out with me feel free to give me a call anytime. Capt Matt
