Tampa Bay - Saltwater

Capt. Matt Ercoli
August 6, 2007
Tampa Bay - Saltwater Fishing Report

Hi everyone, hope that you’re staying cool now that the heat has turned on, I’m trying to but it’s not easy this time of year. It doesn’t seem to have bothered the fish much though, even with the water temps on the flats getting into the low 90’s in the middle of the afternoon. Snook have been biting steadily throughout the day but most of my charters are morning half days as we try to beat the heat. Most of the snook we are catching are in the 22 to 28 inch class. We had some great days on them the last couple of weeks, on our better days we caught 50 or more. The reds haven’t been quite as active and most are in the 20 to 25 inch class. The large bulls should be showing up in large numbers any day with fish averaging 28 to 34 inches and sometimes larger. August is usually one of our best months for large reds and I imagine they will be right on track as they usually are toward the end of the summer. Trout fishing is also really hot right now and although you have to weed through a lot of shorts to catch some legal ones it’s literally as fast as you can reel them in. If we wanted to we could catch the trout by the hundreds. Well that’s mainly what I am up to these days. Snook, trout and redfish that should be my primary targets until the middle of October when I start to head offshore for kings and little tunny. There is some permit out there but they are quite a ways out. Maybe I’ll make it out there a few times over the next few weeks if anyone is looking for a little extra adventure. I hope you have enjoyed my report.

Good luck fishing, Capt. Matt
