Tampa Bay - Saltwater

Capt. Matt Ercoli
November 8, 2007
Tampa Bay - Saltwater Fishing Report

Hello everyone, hope you had a nice Halloween, the kids didn’t make it to my house enough times so I’m sitting here typing and fighting the urge to eat another left over Reeses peanut butter cup. Any how, fall is here on the island of Anna Maria for sure. Last night was the first night it’s been a little chilly in a t-shirt outside. Fishing has been good and will probably get better on the flats as far as large snook goes. Last week we had a lot of numbers, as many as 50 or 60 in a day, with some large snook as well. Some of the snook we landed where between 30 and 34 inches. We also broke off a few bruiser fish in the 38inch class. The redfish are also very good, along with lots of keepers. I had a few days where we caught 20 plus reds but they are not as large as they where a month ago, most are 16 to 25 inches with an occasional red over 30 inches. Trout are pretty good on the deeper edges of the flats for numbers, and some larger ones to 24 inches mixed in with the reds and snook.

The offshore fishing has also been really fast, before the wind started blowing the kings where killing it from the beach to 5 miles offshore, lots of 10 to 30 pounders and sometimes the action was a fast as you could reel them in. There are also a lot of Spanish mackerel mixed in with the kings which makes for some good eating, (well I think they’re good anyway). There are also quite a few Spanish mixed in with the trout on the edge of the flats as well.

Well that’s what we have going on in this neck of the woods? Weather has settled down and fishing is great with live bait, artificial and flies alike. If you are interested in some explosive snook action or some drag smoking kings let me know and we will plan a day. If you’re heading out on your own good luck and keep your hooks sharp and your drags set properly.

Hope you enjoyed my report.
