Tampa Bay - Saltwater

Capt. Matt Ercoli
January 28, 2008
Tampa Bay - Saltwater Fishing Report

Hello everyone, I hope you all had a great holiday and a happy new year. I had a nice time myself and did a lot of good fishing over the holiday season.

I would just like to say thanks to everyone for making my 2007 fishing season a successful one, I really appreciate it. Thank you for the charters you all booked with me and for all the new business sent through referring friends and business associates my way. I could not be a fulltime charter captain without it. 2007 was a great fishing year, very consistent, lots of action and very few slow days. Tarpon season was particularly good, perhaps my best ever with around 500 tarpon hooked between May and July. It was all classic sight fishing with 5 or 6 landed in the 200 pound class, and countless in the 75 to 130 pound class.

Red fishing was very consistent and getting better I believe. The snook fishing was about the same as usual. Trout are coming back nice after a two year slow down from that red tide a few years ago. Offshore fishing was also very good with lots of kingfish, little tunny and even one sailfish. The reef fishing was also stronger this fall, better than we have had in a while with lots of grouper and snapper, even in the bay.

I’m looking forward to a great year this year and everything is looking strong. I personally think the snook need more protection but we still catch a ton of them and it still makes up the bulk of my catch when I’m not tarpon fishing.

Anyway, my calendar is filling quickly for spring and tarpon this summer so I'm just letting everyone know it's time to start planning your day on the water.

Thanks again everyone for making it possible to do what I love everyday for a job.

See you on the water,

Capt. Matt Ercoli
