Seatrout Rule

Capt. Stewart Ames
January 3, 2020
Tampa Bay - Saltwater Fishing Report

Large seatrout fishing has remained the primary attraction in St Joseph's Sound. Although many anglers are disappointed that fishing is all catch and release, it has certainly helped sustain the local volume of fish. On a bad day maybe 10 fish will come to the boat but, on a good one, it might be 40…and all of them are 17 to 22 inches. Even though these fish are the smallest species targeted over the course of the year, the number of hookups can easily offset their size, especially on family outings when action is at least as important as fish size. Best baits, I descending order, for these trout are whitebait, large shrimp and pinfish/grunts. Any minnow or shrimp imitating artificial will get the job done as well. Should an angler be fortunate enough to be fishing on a day with reasonably good tides, redfish are an available target as well. On several recent trips up to a dozen redfish were added to the already impressive trout numbers with fish ranging in size from 16 - 25 inches.
January will likely be another month of alternating warm and cold fronts. Fish before the fronts for best outcomes.

Target Species:

Snook, Redfish, Seatrout
