Big Snook Tampa Bay

Capt. Steven Markovich
June 15, 2013
Tampa Bay - Saltwater Fishing Report

Snook and more snook has been the feature attraction the last 3 weeks. Tampa Bay snook are back in a big way with juvenile and mature beasts chewing the bottom out of the boat. A live well full of frisky white bait is critical. I like to have 500 or more baits onboard, while you may not need that many to fish you will need them if chumming is necessary. Its worth the extra effort.

Saturdays trip started targeting local beach shore lines in 2 to 5' of 83 degree water. My anglers John and Ricky quickly got into frisky trout chasing our baits frequently. While fun snook was our main target and we had yet to hook one. The porpoises were thick and feeding heavily in our fishing area. Finally Ricky brought in our first snook a silvery 24".

Ten minutes later we had another snook which we quickly released only to have the porpoises chase it under the boat. It was an amazing sight watching the porpoises try and get that snook. Good news the snook managed to escape.

A few stops later Ricky's rod bent double and it was game on. The snook made run after run but Ricky was not about to lose this beauty. A thick 36" beauty was now having its picture taken and quick release.

Moments later John got his first snook.

Overall the numbers of snook were way down from recent trips. Very little tide and non stop porpoises didn't help. Great guys made the day tons of fun.
