Tampa Bay Fishing Report

Capt. Mark Magni
February 21, 2014
Tampa Bay - Saltwater Fishing Report

Fished the incoming tide around the Skyway area mid week for Spanish Mackerel. The bite was on for about 2 hours for the 2 anglers I had aboard. Had one of my anglers throwing a Got Cha plug and the other throwing a Johnson Silver Sprite Spoon. Both anglers landed 5 Mackerel before cut offs. Went to 50lb fluorocarbon leader in hopes that it would stop the cut offs, Only to find it shut the bite off. So back to 30lb leader with better result. Got Cha plug landed 11 Mackerel, Spoon landed 9 Mackerel.

Spanish Mackerel have to be 12 inches at the fork of the tail with a Daily Bag Limit of 15. Mackerel do not freeze well so keep only what you are going to eat that night or the next day.

Fished the edges of the shipping channels south of the Gandy Bridge for 2 days this week, with a good mix bag of Black Sea Bass, Silver Trout and Sheepshead. The key to the Silver Trout and Sea Bass was moving water. Most of the Sheepshead were caught on the slack tide.
