Tampa Bay Fly Fishing Report - December

Capt. Ethan Kiburz
January 7, 2019
Tampa Bay - Saltwater Fishing Report

December has been the bearer of cold weather for us in the "sunshine state." We have been greeted with some abnormally cold nights and some somewhat chilly days that have made the fish push back into their winter haunts. Around the moon phases we get negative low tides which can make for some excellent sight fishing a couple days after each cold front. Redfish and trout have been enjoying the scene and have been primarily feeding on crustaceans. Tiny heavily weighted crab and mantis shrimp imitations work the best the next couple months. A long cast ahead of the fish and slow strip is necessary to get a fish to bite. It is rare the next couple months to see snook out on the flats, so dropping down to 15 or 12 pound fluorocarbon leaders will help with fly sink rate and ultimately result in more bites.
