Tampa Bay Redfish Dreams

Capt. Little Jim Fesperman
June 5, 2009
Tampa Bay - Saltwater Fishing Report

I had a dream that came true recently. One in which the redfish were so big that we would end the day with no keepers on ice. That dream came true last month. In 14 charters in May we had the grand total of one keeper redfish. We had two charters that boated seventeen 28" to 35" redfish fishing with Jake and Anna and lost just as many. Many other days catches of 6 to 12 fish losing five or six per day. The worst days I have had were with one of my good clients, Larry, when I couldn't even catch a cold with no big fish that day. This past Saturday as part of a four boat charter of a wedding party (guys day out) from Colorado, I was able to put Jack and Rob on to four big brutes two of which we landed. Yesterday Monday I had Jim and his two sons also from Colorado on these magnificence over the slot redfish. Wednesday, with Todd and his brother-in-law Bobby we hit the beach early catching snook and then headed for my favorite redfish hole for a couple of hours of redfish magic.
No this was not a dream but some of the best really big red fishing I've ever experienced in Tampa Bay. What I now dream about is simply what will this school be like next year! If they aren't poached they all should be around 40+ inches and weight in excess of 20 lb s next spring. Now that's what sweet dreams are made of.
