Tampa Bay Slams Easy To Come By!

Capt. TJ Stewart
June 8, 2009
Tampa Bay - Saltwater Fishing Report

Let's talk about some more tarpon fishing! We competed in tournament three of six of the Professional Tarpon Tournament Series last weekend in Boca Grande, FL. We fought fish for most of the three hours of the tournament, but we didn't get any really big fish to the boat. Although the last fish hooked of the day was roughly 160 lbs, it wasn't considered a big fish compared to the others weighed in tournament. We did have a really great day with five fish caught and the most leader releases in tournament three. These leader releases hosted us up into fifth place out of 63 teams. Now, if we can just keep up the good work next week and get that monster tarpon to the boat.

We have also been catching a lot of tarpon in Tampa Bay. However, unlike the tarpon in Boca Grande, the tarpon in Tampa Bay have been a bit on the smaller side lately. We've been using 10 lb snook tackle to catch 10lb to 40 lb fish, which is great fun. Take a look at the picture; this young man had his hands full getting this fish to the boat. Not only was this his first tarpon, he managed to catch two of them. There are a number of bigger fish around, but they have been hard to catch.

More and more snook are showing up every day. The snook bite is definitely on. We've caught great numbers of great sized snook. Most of the fish are in the 25 inch to 30 inch range, which on the light tackle is a great fish.

Trout fishing has changed a bit. We are still catching great numbers of them, but the fish we are catching are small. There are still big fish around; you just have to work harder for them.

We've caught a few Redfish lately, but most of them have been over 33 inches. Please visit www. castawaychartersinc.com and book your trip today!
