Tampa Bay Snook

Capt. Steven Markovich
July 16, 2011
Tampa Bay - Saltwater Fishing Report

I took advantage of a day off and went where else…fishing. My day started before sunrise running to the Skyway Bridge for bait. The sun was rising as I passed the center span of Skyway Bridge it was so majestic I had to stop for a quick picture.

Bait was thick and I quickly had more White Baits than I needed.

With the morning low tide I started on a deep 6-8' grass flats that was covered in glass minnows. Spotted sea trout and Ladyfish were everywhere. I was doing great with live bait but decided to switch to a DOA Glo shrimp. Cast after cast were greeted with non stop action.

The incoming tide was now flowing so I headed into a Mangrove Island for snook and redfish. On my third cast my white bait was inhaled by a large snook. Before I could react the 35"+ snook was wrapped around some Mangroves then she came out only to run back into the mangroves. The snook went airborne and the line went limp.

I took 7 snook to 25" over the next hour all on live bait.

I was truly impressed by the number of snook I observed today and how many were over 35".
