TAMPA BAY SUMMER TIME FISHING IS HERE!

Capt. TJ Stewart
May 24, 2010
Tampa Bay - Saltwater Fishing Report

Sweet Florida summertime is here! It is hot, and the temperature is steadily increasing. While the hot Florida summer is a bit tough on fishermen, the fish welcome it. The past couple of weeks have been windy ones, but it hasn't slowed us down. The wind can make it hard to catch the big one with the 3 foot to 4 foot seas it produces, but it is doable. Great fish continue to appear every day, and will continue to do so.

Although we've been catching some great redfish, the bite is still hit or miss. We caught several bull reds that measured in over 30 inches last week. Catching a 30 inch redfish on 10 lb fishing line is great. Next week, the tides should improve and make for some better red fishing.

We haven't done a lot of snook fishing lately, but the little we have done has been great. Each trip we managed to catch one or two in the slot limit. It is still fun to catch snook even if you can't keep them. It is even better to see snook alive and biting after the winter we had. A lot of great snook were killed by the brutally cold water temperatures that ravaged Tampa Bay this winter.

If you want to catch a fish, you won't have any problem catching a trout. We've been catching all the trout we could possibly want and then some. A few of those have been in the upper 20 inches range. The trout bite should remain great through the summer.

Holy tarpon! I saw some of the biggest tarpon that I've ever seen in this area last week. A school of roughly 10 fish in the 200 lb range swam by the boat last week. One of those great fish did try to bite our bait, but missed it. A 60 pounder then grabbed the bait, but spit it out before he was hooked. What a sight! Tarpon season starts next week and I have a feeling it is going to a great one. Please visit www.castawaychartersinc.com and book your trip today!
