Tampa Bay and Tarpon Springs Fishing Report

Capt. John Rivers
January 4, 2019
Tampa Bay - Saltwater Fishing Report

The warm new year has me changing up how I would normally fish this time of year. Thankfully, we are getting a cold front today and it should put the fish back in a winter pattern for the rest of the January and February.

The trout fishing has been outstanding the past week on artificial lures. I'm tossing my favorite two baits, Matrix Shads and MirrOlures. I always keep live shrimp on the boat this time of year as a back up, but I've not really needed it, as the fish are just as eager for the plastics. Red fishing has also been tremendous, with a lot of small reds bowing up on our baits ,which is a good things as this means we should have some nice fish the next couple of years.

Snook fishing has also been decent; they were staged up in their winter homes, but it got very warm the first week of January and they moved out back to the flats, but I think with this next cold front they'll head back to their winter hideouts.

This time of year, I really don't toss the net much for white baits as I'm tossing artificials and shrimp, which makes it easier on my back, thank goodness.
January started out good with the trout bite and I'm looking forward to the new 2019 season. If you're heading to the Tampa or Tarpon Springs area, give me a ring and we'll get you on the Triton and have a fun filled day on the water.
Tight Lines… Capt. John
