Tampa Bay welcomes spring time fishing to the bay!

Capt. TJ Stewart

Tampa Bay - Saltwater Fishing Report

Big fish are moving into Tampa Bay thanks to beautiful spring weather. After the brutally long and cold winter we had last year, both the fish and I are welcoming this early spring. Many fish are starting to appear in the areas they normally are during the spring.

Take a look at the attached photos. As you can see, we had some great fish move into the Bay last week. The drum bite has been phenomenal. Catching a 40lb to 50lb fish on light tackle is always great fun. If you want in on the fun, you still have time. The drum bite should last for a few more weeks.

The redfish, snook, and trout bite has been good lately. We've still been catching these fish on shrimp or lures, which is quite a bit different than what I'm used to this time of year. Normally, when the water temperatures are up to where they currently are, the fish prefer live bait. Currently, that is not the case. However, live bait is beginning to show up in the Bay so the fish should start changing their appetite from shrimp and artificial bait to live bait soon.

The tarpon are back! Yes, that's right… the tarpon are back! We started the spring 2011 season with a bang. We landed the first fish we hooked, and it wasn't a small one. It was a 100lb plus fish that put up an awesome fight. It is going to be a great spring fishing season. Please visit www.castawaychartersinc.com and book your trip today.
