Tampa Bay - Saltwater Fishing Report
It was starting to feel a little like fall, but not for long, because it got hot again. It's just that time of the year… the transition time between summer and fall in Florida. We should start to see more changes over the next few months. The weather and water temperature should both drop. Meanwhile, we're just enjoying fishing because it has been great.
Sharks are a lot of fun to catch, and that's just what we've been doing…catching sharks. Most of the ones we've caught have been while fishing for trout. When we've been a really good trout bite, and the sharks move in. Catching a shark on light tackle is great.
All the rain we've had has caused the tarpon to move out of the rivers into the Bay. As a matter of fact, the rain has helped fishing as a whole because it has made the water murky. The tarpon we've caught have ranged in size from 50 lbs to 100lbs, all depending on the day.
We've had some really great redfishing days and others that were a bit slower. The rain has caused a lot of movement among the redfish and has also caused a lot of run off, which changes the tides. The water is still a bit darker in color, but other than that, it is almost back to normal. Despite the abundance of rain and bunk tides, we've still caught some really great redfish. Some of the schools of fish have been big, with most of the fish being over the slot. It isn't a shame when you have to catch ten or more redfish before you catch one that you can keep.
We had a 35 inch or bigger snook hooked last week, but it managed to get away. I think it was the first time both of the guys that were on a trip with me had ever been snook fishing.
