Tarpon Time!

Capt. Matt Ercoli
May 17, 2015
Tampa Bay - Saltwater Fishing Report

Tarpon, tarpon, tarpon they have arrived in full force! Starting May 2nd I switched over to nothing but tarpon fishing as I traditionally do in the beginning of May and it has been spectacular. We have schools numbering in the thousands and 10 to 15 plus fish hook up has been the norm. Even on the toughest days we have manage at least half a dozen solid hook ups. I count hookups because we get to battle a lot of tarpon; landing is a different story sometimes. They fight so hard they manage to find a lot always to get off the hook. I think the most I landed in one day this year so far was 7. The largest tarpon I have landed so far was around 200 pounds. I had a 15 year old boy hook and battle a 180 pound plus tarpon on his fly rod for 2hrs, just before we landed it a hammerhead ate him at the side of the boat. It has been a very exciting tarpon season so far double hookups are a dime a dozen and I have had a few triple hookups as well. Tarpon fishing is my favorite and my true passion that I can't live without. I honestly couldn't imagine life without tarpon to chase. Every morning I leave in total darkness at 5:30 AM and I cannot wait for that first glimpse of the silver glistening fish, the first cast, and the first silver king to explode out of the water. It's happening now and it's truly as good as it gets! Tarpon are the greatest sport fish on earth. I had cancellations for June 1st, 3rd and 18th if anyone is interested. I also have a few tarpon dates left in July. I generally fish them till about the middle of the July.
I hope you have enjoyed my report. Until next time, have great time on the water! Capt Matt Ercoli
