Tarpon are Here!

Capt. Dustin Hilliard
May 14, 2016
Tampa Bay - Saltwater Fishing Report

Tarpon (silver kings) are here! Look for schools in passes on beaches under bridges and in the flats. Crabs, threadfins, pilchards and grunts are just some of the baits these guys love to eat. When sight fishing these poons, make sure to approach them with as much stealth as possible - not fluctuating trolling motor speeds or making too much noise on the boat! Once the vanguard (leader of the school) has been spooked most likely the rest of the school will spook with him causing you to have to move on to another pod. Outgoing tides can be some of the best time for them to feed. Snook are all over the beaches, passes and flats. White bait has been the bait of choice. A lot of 30+ inch fish have been common along with smaller males in the mix.
