Tampa Bay - Saltwater Fishing Report
Its tarpon season, but the fish are in different areas than they have been in seasons passed. There are some fish in the same areas as prior seasons, but they won't bite. The good thing is that just some of the fish aren't biting. Don't worry! Change is coming over the next few weeks. Besides, we've definitely made up for not catching some of the big tarpon with the small ones on light tackle. We've been doing our fair share of tarpon fishing in the river for smaller fish. A 10 lb to 40 lb tarpon is a lot of fun to catch on light tackle. However, we have been catching big tarpon down south. We completed tournaments four and five of the Professional Tarpon Tournament Series in Boca Grande, Fl. last week. We got three tarpon to the boat during tournament four, which put us in second place out of 54 boats. We then competed in tournament five the same day. It was definitely a tougher bite during this tournament, and we unfortunately weren't able to get any fish to the boat. After the fifth tournament, we dropped to fifth place overall. We are competing in the Tarpon Cup Championship next week.
Snook fishing has been out of control! It has been so crazy that we are calling it snook catching instead of snook fishing. Honestly, you can hardly keep the fish off your bait. Over the past week we have caught some great fish, with a number of them hitting the slot. Although they are not in season, they sure are a lot of fun to catch.
On the other hand, redfish have been a tough bite lately. There are a number of them around, but they just aren't biting. When they do bite, they take the light tackle and make you look silly. We did manage to catch some big fish this past week in the 35 inch range.
