Winter time fishing in Tama bay in shallow water!

Capt. TJ Stewart
January 30, 2012
Tampa Bay - Saltwater Fishing Report

The weather in the Tampa Bay area has been cool the past few weeks, but the cool weather certainly hasn't stopped the fish from biting; it's just changed how we're fishing for them. Any day spent fishing in Tampa Bay can be a great day; we just have to put in a little more work sometimes to catch fish. There are so many bays and rivers in this area that hold fish during winter so we can always catch fish. We might not be able to go catch a 100 lb tarpon this time of year, but we can catch a 4lb to 5lb snook or redfish. Catching fish period is great fun.

We are mostly using lures and jigs to catch fish this time of year. Using artificial bait certainly can be more work, but it usually pays off. One of my favorite things to do this time of the year is to get some top water lures and go way up river and catch snook. I don't care who you are… when you get a big snook chasing a top water bait across the surface, it's going to get your blood moving!

Most of the fish that we've caught have been in extremely shallow water. When I say extremely shallow water, I mean water so shallow that you wonder how the boat is going to float in it. The really low tides we have this time of year help. It causes the fish to push out off the edges, which makes them easier to catch.
