Ten Thousand Islands - Saltwater Fishing Report
Spring has Sprung
I think the last few days of winter are upon us now!
With the water temp in the 70's now fishing is starting to get consistent. Each day that goes by you see a sign of good things to come! Whether its the bait that is starting to show, or the stiff winds are are slowing down, or even the big eagle rays are showing up, all signs of spring on its way.
I love this time of year! Tarpon will be the number one target, snook are in season and are feeding well trying to fatten up from their winter diet. And the sweet gag grouper are still in the creeks. Red fish are showing in the shallows waiting for a well placed fly.
Now is the time when the fly rod reigns supreme! Fish are aggressive and the bait is not too thick yet. Calm mornings make flyfishing a dream, and with the warmer waters the fish will be moving around.
Fished Steve Wagner Thursday out of Naples and had a great day with the long rod. Steve nailed six nice snook, a fat redfish, two giant jacks and a snapper.Fish were cooperating well, and every fish practically inhaled the fly as soon as it hit the water.
Night fishing for snook under the light has been going off. Last night fished Steve Gleason, and landed 48 snook up to 25", a redfish, two blue fish, and several ladyfish. It seemed like he caught a fish on every cast. The fish held well under the lights, making it easy to catch multiple fish under each light. All fish fell for a white polar fibre fly from Mangrove Outfitters Fly shop. A 7wt. is all you need, and makes for a real fun evening.
Everything is coming together, tarpon, snook, reds, and trout are all availiable right now making the Grand Slam a good possibility.
Offshore, you can expect to see cobia, permit, and triple tail searching for food. Triple tail you'll find on the traps or floating the tide lines, Permit can't refuse a live crab over a wreck, and cobia will be there as well.
All in all fishing is staring to peak, and is only going to get better. Call to reserve a day on the water before its too late. This is the time of year to make life long memories. Until the next report, tight lines and screaming drags to all!
