Ten Thousand Islands - Saltwater Fishing Report
July fishing is as hot as the noon temeratures!
The heat of summer is on! For the best results start early before the sun rises, action is hot until about 10:00am. The action slows through the afternoon and picks up again after the afternoon showers.
Great time of year for topwater plugs at sunrise. For the first hour of light we have been very successful with snook, redfish, and tarpon on walk the dog type lures such as the Rapala Skitterwalk's, color does not seem to matter. The Storm Chugbug has also been drawing alot of action. Look for points with good current, bait, shade, structure, and you will find action. All three fish are smashing the plugs until the sun gets too high. Switch to jigs and start with the lower water colomn once the sun gets high.
As the sun climbs into the sky, look for deeper water with good current. This will keep the water cooler than the shallows. The fish are alot like us, their looking to get out of the sun and rest until it cools abit, or a shower comes along and cools the surface and reduces the intensity of the sun. Some of the best days have been in the late afternoon after the showers. Tarpon really come alive after these storms when the surface glasses over.
Tarpon are all over the back coves and beaches. Most fish range from 5 - 40 lbs and are eager to eat a plug or fly! Unlike the adults, these fish provide alot of fun and are not fussy feeders. Bigger fish will be found off the beaches around the schools of bait.
Fishing is so good this time of year! It amazes me how our work as a guide slows down so much when the fishing is at its best. If our clients could only take the heat and experience the action and opportunities we have this time of year! Probably because the action is good everywhere!
Well, until my next report I'll be sampleing the finest fishing an angler could experience here in the 10K and the Everglades. Empty waters with near no preasure except from us locals. Tight lines and screaming drags to all!
