Typical Summer Daze

Capt. Jeff Legutki

Ten Thousand Islands - Saltwater Fishing Report

Well summer is finally upon us now. The humidity, heat, and bugs are here like they should be as well as the good fishing that goes along the summer.

Empty waters and hungry fish are there for the taking, as long as you are on the water by sun up. The first hour of light is the best time to fish for tarpon. The morning glass before the breeze starts to blow makes it easy to find the rollers. Most of these fish range from 5 to 60 lbs. It seems their very eager to eat a well placed fly, plug or anything else you can put in their face. These are fun fish, their strong, they jump alot and they don't beat you down like the adult fish over a hundred pounds. There is a few big ones around mostly off the beaches strolling north in the morning in about 12 - 20 foot of water. Live or cut bait is usually the best way to catch them, it can be done on artificial's but can be tough in that amount of water.

Snook are all over the place, inside and out. If you find bait on the outside the snook are some where close. This is a great time of year for fishing these fish on the beaches. Conditions are usually pretty calm and clear making sight fishing a breeze. Small white flies are a sure thing, as a matter of fact I think its the best approach for these beach fish. They are targeting tiny baits, one too small to cast with a spinning rod.

I have been finding some redfish in the back coves on low water. You can see them tipping up and grubbing on the bottom or pushing along the shorelines. This is only for the sight fisherman, waiting for your shot instead of blind casting. A small crab pattern when dropped infront of their face will end up getting smashed!

The day starts early and ends early, by 10:30 the heat is on and the action starts to slow. If the conditions are overcast or after a rainstorm can produce some great memories with superb conditions and happy fish. I love this time of year the trick is to beat the heat!

Until next time, tight lines and screaming drags to all!

Ten Thousand Islands Fishing Forecast:

Beat the heat start early and you can find tarpon rolling just about everywhere. Snook will be cruising beaches in search of foof in good size groups.

Target Species:

Anything that eats a fly

More Fishing Reports:

Come fish the 10,000 Islands and the Everglades National Park for tarpon, snook, red fish and more with either flyrods or light tackle. All artificial no live bait, geared for two anglers. Fly through the shallows in a Hellsbay Whipray. Fishing with the finest equiptment like Sage fly rods and Bauer reels or St. Croix spin rods and Quantum reels. Sight fishing is my passion! Target the toughest saltwater species in mere inches of water and fool them into eating year round.
