Kayak Fishing in the IRL - Titusville

Capt. Henry Hauch
September 15, 2010
Titusville - Saltwater Fishing Report

I took a few hours in the morning (09-08-10) to fish from the Kayak in North Titusville. The Mullet are getting thick, and where they are the Red's follow. I have an area I fish that is only a 5-10 minute paddle from the truck, so it's a relaxing fishing trip. With 1 rod setup for cut bait and the other with artificial off I went. The Mullet began feeding around sunrise, and the Red's slowly started mixing in with them. Most of the Mullet in this school were large, so no food for the Red's. I sent out Sardines under a cork, and worked the artificial as I saw targets. The artificial's (I tried several) got only a few fish, but the Sardines caught enough Catfish and Red's to empty a box of bait. Out of bait and with a slot Red that I invited home for dinner, back to the truck I came. Most of the Red's were in the slot range, with a few over-slot fish mixed in.

I went Kayak fishing again Friday morning (09-10-10)in Titusville, and the Red's were still around. They were not eating as good as Wednesday, but still good enough. The first slot, aka "Catch and Filet" fish, was a good one at 26 3/4". The only one I have ever had closer on the legal size was a 26 7/8" taken at this same spot. The action started before sunrise, and slacked off around 9:00, though the mullet schools remained, the Reds probably went into a little deeper water. I actually stopped fishing before running out of bait today. It is still about a 5-1 on the Catfish versus Redfish count when using cut bait. These Red's were mixed in with schools of larger mullet, so casting artificial's spooked all the fish. Flatlining cut bait, one under a cork, and the other drifting does the job.

With the Fall Mullet run about to swing into action, many game fish will ne on the move. Tarpon and large Jacks are already on our coast, and other spesis will be following soon. When the effects of these hurricanes offshore diminish, it will be a great time to get out and fish, whether offshore, or even inshore.....on the Kayak.
