Mosquito Lagoon report 3/18 from Spotted Tail

Mosquito Lagoon fishing report from Spotted Tail, 3/18/06

Now booking tarpon trips for May and June along the Lee County Coast!

The March 25th Show and Tell has filled, so I have opened another one on March 26th. The cost is still $40 per person. For more information visit http://www.spottedtail.com , email me at [email protected], or call me at 407.977.5207.

This is a report I'm not looking forward to writing. It was a tough week.

On Sunday my fly fisherman, who requested anonymity, joined me for a day's fishing on the Mosquito Lagoon. It was fishing, not catching, as our entire take was a single pinfish, fooled by a chartreuse Clouser Minnow. It was quite windy, and we did see a few fish, but pickings were so slim we didn't get a single decent shot. I didn't take any pictures.

Things were slightly better on Monday. Fly caster Jerry Miller, from New Jersey, joined me for another day on the Mosquito Lagoon. Jerry hooked and lost two reds for reasons we couldn't determine (read Bad Luck), and did catch a black drum on a Rattle Rouser. Again, we had some wind, but at least we had some good shots.

Tuesday a most gifted fly caster, Tom Hancock, who lives in Massachusetts, joined me. We fished out of River Breeze by canoe. Tom got a slot redfish, and then a nice trout of 20 inches or so. Then I got a rat red, and then a nice trout of 20 inches or so. I was tossing a Rattle Rouser, Tom a black Clouser Minnow. It was one of the highlights of the week.

I had Wednesday off. I got some personal business done, then went down the street to the Econ. It's running low and clear. Tossing a small popping bug I got a half dozen stumpknockers and a small largemouth bass in just over an hour, then came home to get ready to fish on Thursday.

Thursday Jerry Goldsmith joined Maxx and I on a Port Canaveral cobia sojourn. Here's what Jerry had to say about the day: "Despite a breeze from the east that dictated spinning gear, not fly rods and despite the somewhat rolling seas (3-4' I'm guessing) the conditions were ideal. We found grass, a little flotsam, and went were only 20-30 minutes in the game before John and Maxx spotted beauty.

Maxx had the fish on solidly for 3-4 minutes before the cobia took the first really powerful run and then headed deep. Inexplicitly, the braided line just snapped. No knot involved. I am guessing the break was at 10-15 yards away from the knot. A real shame. We were already tasting the filets.

And that was IT. Maybe 4 hours later we spotted a second fish, but as I stepped

up and John spun the boat, we went up one side of a good swell and when we came down, the fish was gone.

In the last hour or we saw some tiny Triple Tail, one of which Maxx

caught- way undersized and had a very weird lesions on its lip."

So we didn't get a cobia. And this week that's not surprising. I didn't take any pictures.

Friday I fished Paul Proctor and his friend Mark, from Atlanta. We searched the lagoon from north of Georges Bar to the Whale Tail. We only saw a few fish, and only had a few shots. No one ate. We ended up with a small trout and a catfish, both caught on live shrimp. I didn't take any pictures. So, Mr. Howard, since misery loves company, don't feel too bad, you weren't alone!

Today Fly fisher Paul Nolen joined me for a Mosquito Lagoon kayak fly fishing trip. In spite of the 15-20 mph winds we had by far the best day of the week, getting four slot reds and two black drum to twelve pounds between us. Paul got his first redfish from a kayak and his first redfish on one of his own flies, so it was an historic day for the young man. I did get a few pictures today.
