Fishing was (mostly) better this week, so I feel better!
On Sunday Maxx and I went exploring by kayak, searching in some (for us) new areas. We had a lovely paddle, and found some blue crabs, and that was it.
Monday Terry and Gina Lyons, fly fishers from Michigan, joined me on the Mosquito Lagoon. It was windy (so what else is new) with intermittent clouds, but we found some nice trout lying up on sand spots in the grass. The fish were surprisingly aggressive. Terry used a chartreuse and white Deceiver and got eight to 25 inches. That big one slammed the fly as soon as it touched down (great cast, Terry!), a spectacular strike! Having had our fill of trout we went searching for redfish. We did find some reds, but it was now blowing so hard that we just couldn't get a decent shot. So, no reds, but a fine day anyway.
Tuesday Dorothy Scanio from Orlando and her friend Connie from Austin joined me on the lagoon. It was blowing 20+ out of the southeast. I assumed that the trout would be in the same spot I had left them the previous day. Why would I think that? I know better! I saw three, never got a cast off. We looked in such places as we could look without getting drowned by spray, and ended up with a disappointing catch of two catfish.
Wednesday and Thursday Frank Rowe, from Fort Lauderdale, joined me for some kayak fishing on the Mosquito Lagoon. Wednesday it was windy but there were no clouds, and visibility was great until the water muddied up from the wind. Frank and I had a 'tweenus slam. We got two trout, four reds, and about a dozen black drum between us. I was using a black Redfish Worm fly (this week's Fly of the Week), and Frank mostly used an Aunt Millie's bucktail wiggle jig. Thursday it wasn't as windy, but the overcast made visibility almost nil. In spite of that, we got another 'tweenus slam, with three trout, four reds, and two drum between us. I was again using the Redfish Worm, while Frank switched to a jig with a curly tail.
Today my fishermen wisely decided not to face the 20 mph plus northeast winds. I was home early, and did some writing.
