Indian River Lagoon & Banana River

Titusville - Saltwater Fishing Report

Space Coast report 4/2/06 from Spotted Tail

Mosquito Lagoon fishing report from Spotted Tail, 4/2/06

Now booking tarpon trips for May and June along the Lee County Coast!

It was a busy week, with lots of fish being caught.

Saturday and Sunday were the Show and Tell Seminars at the MINWR. Thirty plus people showed up for these. Here's what one attendee had to say:

"What a wonderful flats fishing seminar! John took us thru the Wildlife preserve, showed us fishing sites, and talked about all the fishing opportunities. He also talked about tackle, lures, knots, fishing techniques, how the temperature, wind, clouds, water quality, bottom composition affect fishing; he told us about fishing the Indian River and Mosquito lagoons and where to find fish in summer and winter.

This information will greatly improve my fishing enjoyment. Thank you for sharing your 20 years of fishing and guiding experience with us! Sincerely, Jerry Zeman"

Monday morning John and kayak went to visit some old Indian River Lagoon friends, spots I hadn't visited in a while. I found some reds in the 20 pound range tailing in shallow water, very spooky. I managed to get three to eat, all on a Redfish Bite. I missed one, had one straighten the hook (using a five-weight no less!) and got the third one, a beautiful, fat fish of about 20 pounds. I slipped out the barbless hook without removing the fish from the water and watched it swim off strongly. Great day!

Tuesday Spotted Tail left the Parrish Park dock with Mike Neill and his friend Buddy on board. We found a couple of redfish schools and managed to catch three slot fish on gold Johnson Minnows and 5.5" CAL jerk baits. We also got several trout to about 20" on DOA Shrimp. The weather was just gorgeous. I was just reading in the newspaper how this past March is one of the driest on record but the weather all this week could not have been any nicer.

Wednesday neighbor and friend Shawn Healy joined me for some Mosquito Lagoon kayak fishing. The reds and black drum were biting well. We got 15 or so between us, and one lonely, little trout. Shawn used spinning tackle with a variety of lures. I just used a #4 Clouser Minnow, black, with my Temple Fork four weight.

On Thursday Bill Rustin and his friend and neighbor Jesse Trevanthan were on Spotted Tail as it left from the Haulover Canal dock. Fly fishers from Tallahassee, Bill and Jesse used gold Dupre Spoonflies and a copper colored Kreelex (tied by Steven L. Baker) to catch at least 15 reds to 27". The Spoonfly was definitely the ticket. While the Kreelex required a sales job, the Spoonfly had them acting positively goofy. I wouldn't have been surprised if they had jumped in the boat to get it, it was that effective.

Friday George Yarko and I joined Shawn Healy on his 21 foot Sea Pro for some cobia searching. I hadn't had very good luck with the brown bombers so far this year, and was not encouraged when the bait shop didn't have my favorite cobia bait, jumbo live shrimp. I did have my castnet and after a few tosses hit the menhaden jackpot, having plenty for us and enough left over for Fred on the At Ease. Fred told us to fish around the anchored ships, which we did. Hot tip! We saw seven cobia. Two were obviously short. Two we didn't get a shot at. We hooked and boated the other three, in a very democratic day of fishing, each of us getting one. The first was just short, 32 inches, the next was 39 inches, 26 pounds, the third was 35 inches, 14 pounds. They seem to like those pogies! We also saw lots of tripletail, but all but one were very small. We hooked the only decent sized one we saw on a DOA Shrimp, but he came off during the battle. We had plenty of fish anyway.

Yesterday writer Sue Cocking joined me for a day's kayak fly fly fishing on the Mosquito Lagoon. The day started slow but ended with a bang. We used a black Clouser Minnow and a black Redfish Worm to get a mixed bag of reds and black drum, having a double hookup on our last cast, and left them biting. We got 14 or 15 fish between us.

Although my left thumb is raw from handling fish it was really a great week.

Remember- life is short. GO FISHING!

Life is great and I love my work!!
