Mosquito Lagoon fishing report from Spotted Tail, 6/24/06

For you fly tyers there's a new fly posted on the Fly of the Week page on my website, the Cousin Itt.

Blown out by Tropical Storm Alberto, I only fished one day last week. I didn't post a fishing report last week because of it.

Friday June 16 I went out of Ponce Inlet looking for bait, fish, whatever I could find. I started early, in the dark. When I first got out there a few Spanish were going off by the north jetty. I got two on jigs and didn't see another fish after leaving the jetty. The boat was back on the trailer at 10 AM.

Monday Scott Radloff and I went scouting in the Mosquito Lagoon. We found some trout and reds early. I got a trout on my first cast, using a Chug Bug. We ended up getting eight or so trout between us on Chug Bugs, DOA Bait Busters, and jerk baits. I hooked one red on the Bug, but failed to boat it.

Tuesday Scott and I went looking around in the Indian River. We found a few reds that we couldn't get to eat plastic. We also found a load of ladyfish and trout going off on glass minnows, all you cared to catch. We used jigs and flies and caught fish for about an hour, although that was all we got.

Wednesday I fished the Pietrowski brothers, James and Len, fly fishers both, in the Indian River Lagoon. We found some reds, couldn't get them. We found some snook and reds mixed together, couldn't get them either. We found some more reds, no takers. We found some ladyfish going off on glass minnows as we headed back towards the boat landing, and both gentlemen got a few on small seaducers.

Friday Chris Myers and I went out on the Mosquito Lagoon. Chris put us on a bunch of tailing reds. I missed two then got a 27" fish on a crab pattern. Chris got another on a crab pattern before he missed one. We had lots of refusals. I got one more on a Mosquito Lagoon Special. I was napping by 3 PM.

Remember- life is short. GO FISHING!

Life is great and I love my work!!
