Titusville - Saltwater Fishing Report

Space Coast report from Spotted Tail 7/1/06

Space Coast fishing report from Spotted Tail, 7/1/06

There were lots of fish around this week. I have some decent photos, visit http://www.spottedtail.com to see them.

Sunday morning saw Rodney Smith and I trailering the Spotted Tail to Stuart for the DOA Writer's Bash. Rodney and I went out onto the Indian River from the north causeway in Fort Pierce. We fished until weathered off. Fishing was slow. I watched a monster snook (over 20 pounds) eat my DOA CAL jig near a dock, only to have the leader part immediately. I can only assume it was nicked by a barnacle on the dock prior to the hookup, as I've never had a snook bite through the leader like a mackerel might. That was really the only bite we got.

Monday Rusty Chinnis was paired with me. I don't fish Stuart very often, and hardly ever on my own, so we looked quite a while without much but a few small trout and snook to show for it. When the tide started out we went wading on a spoil bar. Oh yeah, that's more like it! Between us we got five trout to nine pounds and another short snook, all on DOA Glow Shrimp. In addition I got a bluefish of two and a half pounds or so. An approaching thunderstorm chased us off the water about 2 PM.

Tuesday Paul Heatherington, with Oakley sunglasses, was my angler. We decided to try the ocean this time. We got into some mackerel and ladyfish by the detached jetty right away, but were hoping for something a little more exciting, so left and went hunting. We found the occasional tarpon rolling but never got any good shots. I thought we might go out a few miles and see what we might find out there, but in spite of running parallel to the beach for several miles we didn't see as much as a blade of grass. Coming back in we drifted the inlet for a while with no results, and then bagged it about 11 AM.

Wednesday Ward Scheiderman, a fly fisher from New Jersey, joined me on the Spotted Tail for a morning's fishing in the Indian River. We found lots of snook and redfish but all we got were refusals on every fly we tried. We also found lots trout, jacks, and ladyfish busting on glass minnows, fast action on fly, birds everywhere, very cool, and landed several of each fish species before calling it quits at noon.

Thursday Harry Anderson and his 14 year old grandson Conner joined me, also on the Indian River. I figured, a youngster, lots of jacks, ladyfish, and trout, we should get a lot of action. All the snook and reds were gone from the spots they were so abundant the previous day. We found some tarpon rolling, I got a bite on a Bait Buster but failed to stick it. The jacks, ladyfish, and trout never went off. Fishing the flats for redfish we had shots at a couple dozen fish and managed to get two to eat, both over the slot. The larger one was pushing 20 pounds.

Friday Harry Anderson and his 11 year old grandson Blake joined me. We ran out of Ponce Inlet. There were pogies everywhere, one toss of the cast net garnered enough bait for several days. We went on a search mission and although it took a while we found some fish. We started the day's activities by hooking what turned out to be a 25 pound crevalle, the smallest fish we hooked. We also hooked a couple spinner sharks, a couple blacktips, and a hammerhead. We saw two tarpon, hooked and leadered one, about 100 pounds, but I was disappointed there were so few around with all that bait there. We got off the water a little after noon time, beat up from pulling on so many big fish.

Remember- life is short. GO FISHING!

Life is great and I love my work!!
