Titusville - Saltwater Fishing Report

Space Coast report 8/13

Space Coast fishing report from Spotted Tail, 8/13/06

First off, we have upcoming events:

-On August 19 I will be giving a talk at the Bass Pro Shop in Orlando in conjunction with the Florida Outdoor Writers Association. My talk will be on Proper Techniques for Releasing Fish. Several other FOWA members will also be giving talks at BPS that day on a variety of outdoor topics.

-On Sept. 30 the annual Kids Fishing Day will happen. If you've always wanted to take a kid or two fishing, now is your big chance! Contact me for more information.

Now, fishing.

On Monday Scott Radloff accompanied me out of Ponce Inlet in search of King Mackerel. Have you ever had one of those days??? But I must say the weather was spectacular, it was just a gorgeous morning.

First off we ran all the way down to Turtle Mound looking for bait without success. Then we ran all the way back to the inlet, still nothing. North of the north jetty we found a big load of Spanish sardines and threadfin herring, but I couldn't catch them in the net. We each put a sabiki on and caught two dozen or so minnows. Of course in the meantime the clock was ticking.

Next we had a 20 minute run out into about 50 feet of water to where the fish were (we hoped). Halfway out I stopped to check the livewell. Those of you with Maverick or Hewes skiffs know that in the smaller boats a standpipe is used as a flow-through method of keeping fresh water in the well. My standpipe had fallen out, all the water had drained out, and all the baits that it took us about two hours to find and catch were apparently dead. I was a little ticked off at this point.

I put the stand pipe back in and we kept going. When we got to the fishing spot I checked the live well and miraculously four minnows had recovered. We each baited a line and started trolling. I had a bite right away, started playing the fish, and the line went slack. Upon reeling in I discovered that my Albright had come apart. ARGggghhh! Scott checked his line and he only had a half a minnow, never realized he'd been bit.

I re-rigged and started dragging another minnow, my last. A few minutes went by when I got a bite. I fought the fish to the boat and it was a beautiful, fat bonito, not at all what I wanted. Scott dragged his last minnow until it was dead, no action.

We tried chumming with the leftover dead minnows, hoping to use dead baits to entice our elusive quarry, but we had no response and soon got sick of that. We headed in about noon, one bonito to show for it.

Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday I spent writing.

Thursday I went kayak fishing at River Breeze. I had a new 8 foot three-weight I wanted to try. It was very sweet little rod and there were a lot of fish around. I got seven reds in the slot and probably should have had twice that many. I missed more strikes than I hooked, but it was still an great morning. Activity ceased around noon, so I paddled back and loaded up.

I didn't fish, but I went biking along the Econ this morning. It's real low, the best time to fish it. Maybe I'll try in the morning.

Remember- life is short. GO FISHING!

Life is great and I love my work!!
