Titusville - Saltwater Fishing Report

Space Coast report 8/19

Space Coast fishing report from Spotted Tail, 8/19/06

First off, we have upcoming events:

-On Sept. 30 the annual Kids Fishing Day will happen. If you've always wanted to take a kid or two fishing, now is your big chance! Hit this link http://www.spottedtail.com for more information. Or call me at 407.977.5207. Or email me at [email protected]

As I suspected I would last week, Sunday morning I went to the Econ for some little fish fishing. The river was low and clear, but fishing wasn't as good as I would have expected. I did get a sunfish slam (redbelly, bluegill, stumpknocker) though, so I guess it wasn't that bad, either. The only other bipeds I saw were all on bicycles, and the weather was simply fantastic, a beautiful morning on the river.

Tuesday Scott Radloff and I went out of Port Canaveral with Shawn Healy on his SeaPro. We looked for bait only as far as the Cocoa Beach Pier; not seeing any, we used a sabiki to catch what we needed. As it turned out we didn't need very much, since in spite of searching diligently on buoys, under Sargassum weed, etc., all we saw were two barracuda, neither of which bit, and we didn't get a bite. A dreadful skunking, I'd say.

Wednesday I took a kayak on the west side of the no motor zone. It was eerily quiet. I saw the occasional tailing red and got a few shots, but they spooked off the fly. I only saw maybe 6 baby tarpon but didn't get a good shot. Finally, I was standing in a big mat of dead grass eating my sandwich when a redfish swam almost right up to me. I put down the sandwich and dropped the fly on his face and BAM! First fish of the day, 26 inches or so, on a grizzly seaducer. Now perhaps more focused, I had two more bites right there and got one more fish, also in the slot. On the way back I had more shots at big reds and again every one spooked off my flies. For the nmz it was a pretty slow day.

Thursday first son Maxx and I went kayaking on the Indian River. We only found one spot with fish (see the photos at http://www.spottedtail.com ), but it was great while it lasted. Maxx got one redfish on a brown bendback. I got two redfish on a brown bendback. Rain and lightning forced us off the water before noon.

Yesterday Jason Ellington joined me for a kayak trip out of River Breeze. It took us a while to locate some fish, but once we did we did well, getting about 15 reds between us. Jason used a Yozuri surface plug (don't know the name, but it walks the dog). I used a grizzly seaducer on my four-weight. All fish were in the slot, from low slot to high slot. I got one with 11 spots and another with 14! Jason also got a few trout, although nothing of consequence size-wise. We had heavy overcast all morning, perhaps that's why the fish stayed "on" so long. We were back at the dock at noon.

Remember- life is short. GO FISHING!

Life is great and I love my work!!
