Indian River Lagoon & Banana River

Titusville - Saltwater Fishing Report

This week's report from Spotted Tail, updated 6/1

Outstanding Catch Dept.- Picture it. Saturday, Memorial Day weekend. This is a day I would usually much rather be home, fearing all the traffic on the water, but I had a charter in the Mosquito Lagoon, one John Popa of Altamonte Springs and his friend Dale from Arizona. We found a relatively out of the way corner of the lagoon and anchored up, and proceeded to catch fish until we were stupid. I lost count, but we put three 29 inch trout into the boat along with several smaller ones (the smallest being over five pounds) and also caught redfish one after another, having three on at once at one point. A darned good day, all things considered.

On the way home my wheel bearings exploded. Have you ever tried to find trailer parts on Memorial Day weekend? Capt. Karl Dienst was kind enough to loan me his Hewes Bonefisher for my charter on Tuesday. Thank you, Karl! I had a fly caster who shall remain nameless. He cast to one school of big reds and managed to pull a four inch pinfish from out of the middle of them. Suicidal pinfish! It was the only fish he got all day, in spite of being in reds most of the day. If you're a fly caster you really need to be able to cast more than 35 feet if you want to enjoy any kind of consistent success. It was this angler's first real crack at redfish, and I would have really liked for him to get one, especially one of the big ones that we saw.

I am putting together a spare wheel assembly for my trailer so next time I have a problem I can just switch out the wheels. I just got the parts yesterday afternoon and put the wheel back together this morning. That's way too much down time. In spite of the occasional aggravation...

...Fishing is great and I love my work!
