Indian River Lagoon & Banana River

Capt. John Kumiski

Titusville - Saltwater Fishing Report

This week's report on the upper Indian River and Mosquito Lagoon from Spotted Tail, updated 6/23

Outstanding Catch Dept.- We have a few this week. Last Friday I fished Brian Gruber and his friend Darren. The bite was good. They got four reds between 20 and 30 pounds and also two fish in the slot. Not a bad day.

Tuesday I fished Patti Sunderland from Florida Fishing Outfitters. She hooked a big red on a black Bunny Booger, but it broke off. She had another hit but missed the hook set. I took one cast all morning but hooked and landed a 29 pound red, fooled by a Maxx's Black Drum Clouser minnow.

Yesterday my boys, my stepdad Dick Barber, and I took a busman's holiday and went to Jupiter to fish with Capt. Scott Hofmeister on his 24 foot Morgan, the Blue Hole. Fishing was good. We got about two dozen little tunny, on both flies and spin, as well as numerous rainbow and blue runners. Flies of choice were chartreuse and white Clouser minnows and Blondes. DOA TerrorEyz and deep running Bait Busters accounted for the spin catches. Dick got the big fish, a magnificent 25 pound snook caught near the inlet, one of several we got. Definitely an outstanding catch. We also had several good shots at big tarpon, but they declined our offerings. A day with Capt. Scott at this time of year is as close to guaranteed action as you can get with a fishing rod. His phone number is 561-747-2101.

Wednesday I fished Rob Springer and his friend Aaron in the Mosquito Lagoon. We had plenty of shots at big reds but they wouldn't eat. Disappointing. We did get six fish in the slot. The best fish of the day was an eight pound trout that we photographed and released. Even without the big boys, still a pretty good day.

My offices will be closed until July 25 as I travel on a business trip. If you need a guide in the Indian River or Mosquito Lagoon during this time you should call Patti Sunderland at 321-868-0000 or for fly fishers, Brian Clancy at 877-409-7380. My fishing reports will resume the week of August 3.

Fishing is great and I love my work!
