Indian River Lagoon & Banana River

Capt. John Kumiski

Titusville - Saltwater Fishing Report

This week's report on the upper Indian River and Mosquito Lagoon

from Spotted Tail, updated 8/12

On Monday I fished a father and son from Nebraska, Jim and Erin Dinklage. They had never seen the Indian River Lagoon before and didn't quite know what to expect. The day started off OK with a quick school of reds, but they bailed on us after we'd only caught one. A long slow stretch then happened, and then we found a couple of suicidal redfish schools. We ended up getting about 15 reds to 10 pounds, altogether an acceptable day.

Thursday I fished Jeff Webb, a flycaster from Indialantic. The reds were NOT suicidal, lying on the bottom unless pushed by the moving boat. Have you ever noticed that it's very hard to catch fish when the boat is running? Anyhow, we saw a lot of reds while running, but very few while poling. Jeff got two tarpon to 15 pounds, and that was it for the day. Still, two tarpon is not a bad day for a fly fisher.

Friday and Saturday I fished down in Stuart with Mark Nichols and John B. Sweeney, respectively. The north fork of the St. Lucie is draining Lake O again and the water in the river, through the inlet, and even out into the ocean is a disgusting brown color. There are some fish around, especially if you find clean water, but it was slow for us both days.

Fishing is great, and I love my work!
