Good morning everyone! For those who missed my report last week, my bride and I went to Chicago to celebrate our 25th wedding anniversary. What a great town! We went to museums, galleries, the aquarium, restaurants, and heard lots of great music. Oh, and she went shopping. I found out that I can still stay out until 2 AM. And it only took me three days of recovery time to get back to normal once I got home.
It's mid-July. That means it is H-O-T. You may want to consider fishing after dark.
I only fished twice this week. Tuesday, after not having been out for 11 days, I went to Turnbull Basin. I circumnavigated the place and saw very little, only a half dozen reds, not even much bait. All the spots that had been producing trout steadily produced nothing on Chug Bugs or jerk baits. We only got three bites all morning, and put one trout in the boat that would not have held batter. Very discouraging.
Yesterday I launched the kayak at River Breeze. I was expecting that I would have to go on a search mission and was fully prepared to do so. Imagine my surprise and delight when the first spot I checked had solid numbers of reds. It was everything Tuesday was not, a solid eight out of ten. The fish were tailing, backing, laying up, cruising, the works. I had at least 30 shots, hooked seven fish, and released five of them, breaking off the other two. I was thinking of my kayaking buddies, Keith, Jerry, and Patrick. Patrick, we need to talk, man! Anyway, the flies of choice were Sexy Flies with weedguards. I was fortunate that low tide was about 9 am, giving me four hours of wonderful fishing. As soon as the water started coming up I couldn't see the fish any more, and the kayak was back on the truck at noon time.
Remember- life is short. GO FISHING! But take a little time to smell the roses, too!
Life is great and I love my work!!
