Titusville - Saltwater Fishing Report

John Kumiski's SPotted Tail report 8/28

This week’s fishing report from Spotted Tail, updated 8/28/05

Some of you reading my reports have undoubtedly been curious as to what SexyFlies are. It's by no means finished, but the SexyFlies website is up and running, complete with tying instructions. Click on the link below if you want to check it out:

Fishing this past week, well, I made a couple of bad decisions. I knew those beach tarpon were gone, but I kept hoping. They weren't there Sunday, and they weren't there Wednesday. I'm better now.

I cancelled my trips on Thursday and Friday. Something about those high winds and heavy rains associated with Katrina made me not want to go. Pray for those about to get slammed.

September begins later this week. Hurricanes notwithstanding, it's one of my favorite months of the year. The NFL kicks off its season. The Autumnal Equinox is just three weeks away. And for fishermen, one of the main events in Florida fishing will start, the annual mullet run along the beaches and through the lagoon system, lasting into October and triggering some of the most awesome fishing of the year.

Silver mullet are tropical fish, and as the days shorten and the water temperature drops they migrate south by unimaginable numbers. The water is literally black with them some days. Finding fish is as easy as looking for diving pelicans and exploding gamefish.

Last year the hurricanes played havoc with our fishing (I didn't have a charter in September last year), but the previous year I had a couple of 60 and 70 fish days. Every gamefish that eats mullet is in on the action, fattening up for the approaching winter, and you never know what's going to take your hook.

Be sure to get yourself out to take advantage of this wonderful gift from Mother Nature!
