Mosquito Lagoon fishing report from Spotted Tail, 3/4/06

Now booking tarpon trips for May and June along the Lee County Coast!

Due to popular demand I have scheduled another Show and Tell seminar on March 25th. I have three spaces left. If it fills and thee is sufficient demand I will schedule another for the 26th.The cost is still $40 per person. As always you can see the photos for this week by visiting http://www.spottedtail.com

Monday Rick Burns and Joe Espin came over from Floral City to film a segment on the Mosquito Lagoon for Joe's TV fishing show. With 20 knot plus winds it simply didn't work. We saw exactly four fish, got exactly one bite (which was missed) and got zero footage. We were done before noon.

Tuesday Shawn Healy and I went out. The day was almost perfect and the fishies were hungry. We got the first three on DOA Shrimp, then switched to gold spoons. Shawn got nine reds to 30 inches and two trout to 25 inches, one on a spinner bait. I got six reds to 28 inches and one 24 inch trout.

Wednesday JB Shireman and Greg Owsley, fly casters from Colorado, wanted to go redfishing. There was an almost astonishing amount of boat traffic for a Wednesday and several places I wanted to fish were already occupied when I got there. Greg got two fish, his first ever, and JB hooked and broke one off. We had several refusals; the fish weren't eating nearly as well as they had the day before. Not a great day, but certainly better than Monday was.

Thursday Maryland native Todd Hitchcock and his lovely girlfriend Jenny Caddell joined me for a day on the Mosquito Lagoon. Boat traffic was even heavier than the previous day, it looked like a typical Saturday. There were five boats poling around on the fishless Tiger Shoals flat! Anyhow, using soft plastic Flukes and gold 1/4 ounce Johnson Minnows the pair put five reds in the boat.

Yesterday George Yarko helped me out by agreeing to search for big redfish. We had photographer Dusan Smetana in the boat with us and he needed photos of a big redfish. It was blowing too hard and I didn't think we'd find any. I was almost right, we saw exactly one. We did see a few slot sized fish and Dusan had one on (the fish took a 5.5" DOA CAL jerkbait) but the hook pulled. We ended up with a fairly unsuccessful day, three dink trout and no photos. It wasn't a good week for media types aboard the Spotted Tail!

Today two fellow Polacks joined me, Tom Sabornik (and I'll be shocked if I spelled that one correctly) from Chicago, and Mark Croel, who lives here in Orlando. When I got off the water and listened to the weather radio the wind was blowing 18 mph with gusts to 26, so you know we didn't have a great deal of success. Because of the combination of the clouds and the wind blowing the water out I ran aground once and had to get out and push, always an extra plus in my day! Plus when I was staked out once the cord somehow jumped off the pushpole, so I had to get out again and retrieve it. Oh yeah, it was wonderful. We got three short trout, all on DOA Shrimp, and three slot reds, all on gold Johnson Minnows. Considering the conditions I thought we did pretty well. I don't use Johnson Minnows that often but I sure used them a lot this week, and with great success I might add.
