King mackerel bite is here!

Capt. Dave Pinkham

Venice - Saltwater Fishing Report

Yesterday I ran to back to back 4-hour offshore trips. On the morning trip we left the dock at 7am.

We started trolling as soon as we cleared the Jetty which is about 3 minutes from leaving the dock. The first spoon that hit the water was immediately hit by a 15-pound kingfish. What a start! After that we caught all the kings we wanted and with time to spare we ran out to a reef about 8 miles out and caught several keeper gag grouper.

On the second trip of the day we left the dock at noon. I was a little concerned the bite may have slowed and I had 6 guys from Minnesota to please.

No sooner than we cleared the Jetty I noticed a large school of pilchards. With one cast of the net we loaded the live baitwell and away we went.

The first and only stop of the day was a honey hole about 10 miles west of my dock. We anchored down and within seconds had a big kingfish hit one of the liwve pilchards. And so it went for the next 3 hours as we hooked up and battled kingfish, cobia, and tunny. I know those Minnesotians will be back! Actually, this wasn't their first trip aboard the Legacy, and according to thm it won't be their last. That's good news because the action down here has been red hot!
