Venice - Saltwater Fishing Report

Deep Gulf Wrecks Produce Big Fish
Over this past weekend we fished over one of the deeper wrecks that lie offshore about 30 miles west of Venice. One general rule to fishing on the Gulf is any bottom structure attracts fish. These old ship remnants often are fished too much to produce a lot of grouper, but can be great spots to hook up with big pelagics like sharks, Greater amber jacks, cobia, blackfin tuna, and giant jack crevelle.
Anyway, the giant jacks did make a showing while we were there. I've got to tell ya, they've got to be one of the hardest fighting fish in the ocean. I'm talking 25 to 40 pound jacks. They are the same variety of yellow tail jacks that are often caught in the bay, only much bigger. Mixed in with the giant jack crevelle were plenty of Greater amberjacks in the same size range. The AJ's are also know for their fighting ability, although I think the giant jack crevelle put up even a bigger battle. Needless to say, I'll bet there were a few sore muscles on some anglers come Monday morning.
Remember, if you're too busy to go fishing you're just too busy. Get out and go fishin cuz' it's good fer ya!
