The fishing is good in the Golden Isles. King and Spanish Mackerel, Barracuda, Cobia and Spadefish are being found offshore. Sharks and Tarpon are being taken near shore and Speckled Sea Trout, Flounder, Redfish and Whiting are roaming inshore waters.
Look for Mackerel, Barracuda, Cobia and Spade fish on area reefs 10 to 50 miles offshore. G Reef, C Reef and the Navy Towers are popular and productive. Mackerel and Barracuda can be taken slow trolling live bait and fast trolling lures and plugs. Cobia will often come to the boat for shade and baitfish. They can be taken on a two ounce jig head and six inch jig body cast to them. Spadefish eat cannon ball jellyfish. Smart anglers catch a few jellyfish on the way out. Simply idle along and catch them in a net. Small ones, the size of a half dollar can be fished whole, larger ones can be quartered. You can see dozens of Spadefish, usually near the buoy that marks the reef, in the water column. Cast the un-weighted jelly ball into the school and let it slowly sink. You can see the fish take the bait but you must wait until you feel the fish before setting the hook.
Shark and Tarpon can be found working sand bars in area sounds and just offshore. Bait fish are sweep along by the current created by the bars and Sharks and Tarpon take advantage of the easy pickings. Anchor the boat in about 10 feet of water or where you see Tarpon rolling and chunk out a live Poggie. Dead bait works almost as well. Place the rods in the holders and get ready for a fight.
Inshore species can be taken on live shrimp and mud minnows. The most popular fishing technique is float fishing. Most fishing is near oyster bars which attract shrimp and bait fish. The only way to fish these bars with out getting hung up is with a float.
