April Fishing Forecast

Capt. Preston Harden
April 9, 2015
Lake Hartwell - Freshwater Fishing Report

Water Level: 2.5 feet below full pool
Water Temperature: Upper 50's

After a cold winter, March has been warmer and the fishing has been good. We have been throwing small flukes to the banks in the afternoon catching largemouth bass, spotted bass, hybrids and stripers. April will still be good for artificial in shallow water, especially in the mornings before the Sun gets high. The fish will also eat Herring around points and Shoals on free lines. By late morning, they will eat a Herring on a downline in deeper water.

Everything is shallow in April. Most species of fish are thinking about Spawning. Crappie move to the backs of creeks to spawn around any structure. Hybrids and stripers are on the banks trying to spawn. Some run up the Seneca and Tugaloo rivers, but most try to spawn on the banks of the main Lake. Largemouth and spotted bass are everywhere. The spotted bass population has exploded and they are easy to catch and very good eating. The weather is perfect, so get out of the house and enjoy the spring on Lake Hartwell.
