Striper and Hybrid Bite is On

Capt. Preston Harden
August 13, 2015
Lake Hartwell - Freshwater Fishing Report

Water level: one below full pool
Water temperature: upper 80s

As of mid-July, the striper and hybrid bite has been fast and furious. Most days we catch them at will. Most fish average 3 to 6 pounds with a few big stripers mixed in. The fish are on their southern migration towards the lower Lake. We have been catching them on top of the thermocline coming down the river. There is no thermocline in the lower Lake and that is where the best water quality will be in the heat of summer. Look for stripers near the dam in August. A good graph and GPS map become paramount to catching fish in the lower Lake in the summer. You have to be on top of them to catch them at 50 to 120 feet deep. Live blue back Herring work great but sometimes a good jig and swim bait worked through the school will out fish live Herring.

Bass fishing is slow in August with most fish heading to deeper water. A drop shot rig or a shaky head worked in the deep brush will catch a few largemouth and spots. Like for striper fishing, a good graph and map are critical to finding the brush and the bass in the brush.
