Crappie and Stripers

Capt. Doug Nelms
December 1, 2010
Lake Oconee - Freshwater Fishing Report

Water temp is low 60's in the biggest part of the lake with temps as low as 57 in upper end.

Finally the water temp has gotten right and the fishing on Lake Oconee has started off for the 2010/2011 year. First of all the crappie have been biting very well. Some big fish are being caught in the River Bend, Armor Bridge, and Lick Creek areas. Crappie anglers have been spider rigging and pulling jigs in these areas with great results. One angler told me that he caught his limit everyday for 3 weeks straight, and that was all before noon!

The stripers are starting there thing too. It seems like it takes longer each year for them to recover from the hot water. River Bend seems to be the place they always show up first. They are being caught on spoons, live bait and trolling crank baits. The largest ones now are around 6 to 7 pounds, but the bigger ones will show up any day. There is a small congregation of gulls on the lake, but they too will show up big in a few days.

If you want to get out there and catch some good fish, give me a call at 770 354 0300, or send an email. It is going to be a great season.
