Hybrids are at the dam!

Capt. Doug Nelms

Lake Oconee - Freshwater Fishing Report

March 30, 2008

The crappie have moved up on the shallows and they are in full spawn, which means for me it is time to chase the hybrids!

I have never seen such big fish taken at the dam as I have this year. Wow! The hybrids are huge! I have seen several fish that could go close to 12 pounds, that right, I said 12 pounds. If any of you fish with me you know I am stickler about how people weigh their fish, but I am telling you this year the hybrids are scary big.

For the first couple of weeks at the dam the cut bait fisherman just wear everyone else out. But after about 2 weeks the fish seem to change their appetitie and began to feed up in the water column. I think this process has just about happened. Over the past few trips I have caught a lot of fish in just half day trips. The bite seems to be mainly on downlines for most of the day. However at the end of the day, the bite will suddenly go to all flat lines. I will be fishing at the dam for the next few weeks and if you want to catch a really trophy size hybrid, now is the time to go.

Tight Lines,

Doug Nelms
