Lake Oconee, Madison Georgia

Lake Oconee - Freshwater Fishing Report

Crappie: Over the last 3 days I have noticed many boats out on the lake, right behind my house. This is where the channel runs deep, from the Apalachee River, and makes up on leg of Lake Oconee. Whenever I see fisherman gathered there enmass it means only one thing; the crappie have arrived.

I spoke to a local who said he had been doing very well using the method, that is not a big secret, which everyone uses this time of the year to catch big slabs. He has been trolling 8 rods, with minnow tipped Hal Flys, over the river channel and catching, "a mess" as he called it, each time he has been out last week. The great thing about this time of year is that the crappie can be really big. Maybe larger than anything you are acustomed to catching. I have already heard of reports of many fish over 2 1/2 pounds, with bigger ones to come I know. The fish are still not holding as well as they could be in one spot. It seems that they will go from the channel to the powerlines in one day, and then back again. Now that is only about 1/2 mile difference, so if you are not getting bites in the channel, move to the powerlines until you find them.

The crappie are still holding well in Sugar Creek, with people reporting catches regularly. Once again you will find them out in the channel, about 15 to 20 feet down.

The crappie are still not at the lights just yet, however I did see 5 or 6 guys out Friday night fishing with lights. It looked as if the action was not too hot as yet.

Hybrids: They are begining to show up around the dam and on Tornado point. I fished 3 days in a row and caught only 10, but all of them were over 4 pds. One topping the scale at 5.5 pounds. Live bait is the answer and the problem is finding it. I threw my net about 40 times on Sat and only caught 20 shad. In the points were the hybrids are there are plenty of shad there, but they are really hard to catch in 40 feet of water. If you are looking for shad try around the rip rap of any bridge during noon time and if they are pulling the water you may luck up.

This is the time of year when things began to get really exciting on Lake Oconee. If you are intrested in booking a trip contact me on my web site. I am fishing day and short night trips right now. Check back often to see updated reports.
