Lake Oconee - Freshwater Fishing Report

Crappie 5/30/02

This is the time of year when you see guys fishing for hours at a time, and not picking up one fish. But it is better than being in the office, right? However if you know the right places you can turn your fishing into catching and fill your cooler with slabs, here at Lake Oconee. I am catching most of my crappie at night right now, under certain lighted docks. The secret is finding enough water under these structures because GA Power has been pulling the lake really hard in the late evening. Throw the lightest jig you have in your tackle box. I prefer white curly tail grubs and I cast them to the lights and bring it slowly back to the boat. If they are there they will let you know, but don’t spend too much time at any one place.

Hybrids 5/30/02

The hayfields are once again boiling with hybrid bass surface activity. You can find where they are just by following the boats and trolling around with everyone as anglers wait for the schools to come up. The workhorse lure for this kind of fishing is a popping cork, with about a 12 inch leader, tipped with a “poppin thing, or thang popper. (Pronunciation depends on which side of the lake you live on) White always seems to be the color, however I think black or white rooster-tails work very well also. Especially after the schooling stops and the fish go down. You can normally work the rooster tail off the bottom and pick up fish with regularity. The best time is just before dusk, right off the 12 to 13 foot ledge on the hayfields. There has also been some hybrid activity up around the small island in front of the Swords Bridge boat ramp.

Doug is a licensed USCG Captain and has been guiding over 14 years. His specialty is trophy Striped Bass, and huge Crappie during certain months. His boat is a Ranger 2300 Bay Series powered by a 225 Yamaha 4-stroke motor. It is spacious and can fish up to 6 people! During the hot summer months he heads to the Chattahoochee River to pursue monster Striped bass. He fishes from a custom jet boat, built exclusively for fishing the river. BigFishHeads Guide service operates year round.
