Lake Oconee, Madison Georgia

Lake Oconee - Freshwater Fishing Report

Crappie 6/23/02

After 2 weeks at fishing in stormy south Florida, I am back home and once again chasing our quarry. I understand that the crappie fishing has been super at night. Areas like Sugar Creek, the channel below I-20, and everywhere in between have been hold some really good fish. Since the first day of summer was only days ago, it means that your most comfortable fishing will have to be done at night. Of course pitching to the lighted docks will always produce fish, however as GA Power begins to generate water pretty strong over these summer months, you need to find docks that have good water depth.

Hybrids 06/23/02

If you want some fast, exciting fishing, and can take the heat, now is the time to chase hybrids on Lake Oconee. They are showing up in their usual places on the lake and the bite just before the sun goes down has been really good. Most guys are floating around between the hayfields and the pipelines waiting for the fish to surface. In some schools the fish may go 2 to 3 pounds and in others they may be small, but when the start their surface activity you can catch a fish on every cast. The lure that seems most effective is the popping cork with a “thang popper” (honestly that is the name) tied about 14 inches from the cork. Throw as far as you can and just work the device right through the school. You will not be able to get it back to the boat without a fish on.

During the hot summer months he heads to the Chattahoochee River to pursue monster Striped bass. He fishes from a custom jet boat, built exclusively for fishing the river.
